Sedums or stonecrops are great for brightening late summer and early autumn with their attractive flowers that are relished by pollinators. Botanists for some perverse reason, have renamed Sedum as Hylotelphium but we prefer to stick with the older and much more pronounceable name. Sedums have fleshy leaves that are used for storing water and are very drought resistant once established. There are several low growing species suitable for rockeries or the front of borders with bright yellow flowers but the most popular Sedum is Sedum spectabile also known as the ice plant. This low growing perennial graces borders with its masses of pink flowers to provide colour and interest well into autumn. Sedums require minimal maintenance.
