Erica x darleyensis is a real gem of a plant. This hybrid Erica is a vigorous ground cover and flowers for several months from mid-winter until spring giving colour when it is most needed in the garden. Depending on the variety, the flowers range from white to dark pink and are borne in profusion. Most varieties will grow to about 30 cm (12 inches) and provide dense ground cover that can prevent weed growth. They are undemanding about soil and unlike other Ericas are not fussy about acid soil. They grow best in an open, sunny position. They generally do not require pruning. The early flowers are relished by pollinators and are particularly useful as they provide pollen and nectar at a time when little else is available. You can find this jewel of an evergreen shrub on sale here at Radway Bridge Garden Centre.
