Plant Focus - The Fatsia Spiders Web

Fatsia japonica ‘Spiders Web’.

Few plants have the dramatic year-round impact of Fatsia japonica ‘Spiders Web’. The large leaves are exceptionally handsome, and each one is splashed with a white colouration, some are entirely white, others are greener. The plant is evergreen, so it is great for year-round effect in a natural focal point in the garden or perhaps a patio container. The plant creates a dramatic subtropical effect. The plant can grow to about 2 metres ((6 feet) in height in borders and if growing in a pot, select a large pot (minimum 60 cm diameter) to support growth and ensure stability Using John Innes potting compost is preferable to using soil-less potting compost as John Innes is heavier and will help to stop the plant blowing over in strong winds.
The plant is hardy but can be damaged by easterly winds in winter. In borders, plant it for best effect in a semi shaded location amongst other shrubs for protection, if grown in a pot, a fleece jacket can provide some winter protection. The plant suffers from few pests or diseases and if growing in a pot, an annual feed with a compound fertiliser such as blood, fish and bone will help to keep it in good condition. Pruning is seldom necessary but a light trim in spring will suffice. Remove all weather damaged leaves and stems.
The plant flowers in October with creamy white flowers in spherical clusters. The late flowering is particularly useful for bees who will relish the pollen and nectar before going into winter dormancy.
