Photinia: Year-Round Beauty with a Fiery Touch!

Photinia: Year-Round Beauty with a Fiery Touch!

Some shrubs are spectacular for a brief period of time, such as Forsythia with its masses of bright yellow flowers in spring, and others provide a much longer period of interest with decorative evergreen foliage. Photinia is one such plant, the young shoots of this shrub are richly coloured and contrast with the older foliage to give a long period of interest in the garden for very little maintenance. Photinias have gained popularity in recent years on account of these attributes as well as their adaptability. They are excellent border specimens, make attractive informal hedges and the more compact varieties are excellent subjects for containers.

The most common Photinia in cultivation is the variety ‘Red Robin’ and although its popularity is merited there are several exciting variants to add appeal to Photinias. For example, the variety ‘Camilivy’ has an upright habit making it particularly useful for hedging. The variety ‘Carre Rouge has a more compact habit than Red Robin and even more compact is the variety ‘Little Red Robin’ that is sufficiently compact to be planted in a patio container. The variety ‘Pink Marble’ has an interesting variant with attractive purple, pink young growth. The new leaves can also have a cream margin to add to the attraction.

Photinias thrive in full sun or semi shade and are not fussy about soil provided it is well drained. Pruning will encourage brightly coloured young growths. They are relatively trouble free and can be relied upon to provide a colourful display. New in, for February 2025, you can find these and many other varities of this vibrant beautiful workhorse of the garden, for just £12.99. A guaranteed focal point for any garden or patio.
